Welcome to the Faculty of Medicine of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Through exchange programs, you can study at our faculty for one to two semesters. If you would like to study in Mainz for more than two semesters or graduate from the University of Mainz, you must apply for a standard study place.
To study as an exchange student at the University Medical Center Mainz, you will require proof of German language skills at the B2 level as per the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The university’s International Preparatory and Language Center (ISSK) offers German language courses specifically for exchange students to enhance previous language skills.
The academic year is divided into two semesters: The winter semester runs from 1 October to 31 March, although classes are held from mid-October to the end of February. The summer semester runs from 1 April to 31 September, although classes are held from mid-April to the end of July. You can find more details here of the deadlines and dates.
The application deadline for the winter semester is always 15 July and for the summer semester, 15 January. You can download the required documents here.
Deadlines for the Learning Agreement: 1 September for the winter semester, 1 March for the summer semester.

To receive ECTS credits for a module, you must attend it in full (for example, in anesthesiology you must attend two practical courses and four lectures, although attendance at lectures is not compulsory). Since you will be taking the module in its entirety, you will only need to enter the module name and the ECTS credits in your Learning Agreement. We will then register you for all the events associated with the module.
In addition, please note that you can only take internal medicine, urology and the surgery block practical course if you spend an entire academic year (two semesters) at the University Medical Center Mainz.

Once you have filled out your Learning Agreement, send it to auslandsstudium-medizin@uni-mainz.de. We will verify whether your choice of courses is feasible in this form or whether courses will overlap with each other. If any changes are necessary we will contact you.
If you would like to complete a clinical rotation (Famulatur), this is possible and can be included in your Learning Agreement. To do so, however, we will require proof that you have been granted a clinical rotation (Famulatur) placement.
You can find a list of all classes offered in the Department of Medicine, which also includes the corresponding ECTS-Credits, here (Pdf-file, 152,5 KB).
In order to get ECTS-credits for a Modul, you have to take all the classes the modul consists of (e.g. in case of Anästhesiologie/ Anesthesiology, you would have to sign up for 2 Practical Courses (Praktika) and 4 Lectures (Vorlesungen). While attendance is mandatory in Practical Courses, attendance is not taken in lectures). Scoring credits for single classes is not possible.
Please just put the name of the modul and the corresponding ECTS-Credits in your Learning Agreement. We will sign you up automatically to the respective classes which form the modul.
Bear in mind that you can only enroll in Chirurgie (Surgery), Innnere Medizin (Internal Medicine) and Urologie (Urology) if you stay a whole academic year (2 semesters) at Mainz University Medical Center.

As soon as you have filled in and signed your Learning Agreement, please forward it to auslandsstudium-medizin@uni-mainz.de. We will check whether your course choice is possible or not. If classes collide and changes have to be made, we will get in touch with you.
In case you are interested in doing a Famulatur, it is generally possible. However, we can only register it in your Learning Agreement, if you provide proof that you hold a seat for a Famulatur. A description of how to apply for a Famulatur, can be found in the following paragraphs.
If you are interested in a Famulatur at the University Medical Center Mainz, you have to apply directly at the respective clinic or insitute. You can find a list of all clinics and insitutes here. The purpose of the Famulatur is to aquaint students with medical work in insitutions of ambulant and stationary patient care. Usually, the duration of a Famulatur is 4 weeks.
German language knowledge on level B2 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) is mandatory if you are interested in a Famulatur at the University Medical Center Mainz. You do not have to enroll at university for a Famulatur. Besides language proficiency on level B2, you also need proof of an occupational health check. You have to take care of sufficient insurance coverage yourself, the University Medical Center does not provide insurance.
If you are interested in completing a tertial of your Practical Year at the University Medical Center Mainz, there are several prerequisits you have to fulfill.
You cannot apply for a PJ here at the University Medical Center Mainz, if you have already finished your studies or the PJ is not a mandatory part of your curriculum.
When assigning PJ seats, students from Mainz are favored. Foreign applicants can only apply after the official application period. You can find a list of teaching hospitals, application modalities and further information here.
Pleases keep in mind that you have to take care of your health insurance independently, the University Medical Center Mainz does not provide health insurance.
If you are interested in completing a clinical rotation (Famulatur) at the University Medical Center Mainz, you must apply directly to the relevant department or institute. You can find a list of all departments and institutes here. The purpose of a clinical rotation (Famulatur) is to familiarize students with the practice of medicine in outpatient and inpatient health care facilities, and it usually lasts for 4 weeks.
To be eligible for a clinical rotation (Famulatur), students must have a command of German at the B2 level as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students will not be required to enroll at JGU Mainz. However, they should have attended an occupational health check-up, or this will need to be completed on site. You must ensure yourself that you have adequate insurance cover; the University Medical Center Mainz cannot provide you with the necessary cover.
If you would like to complete a tertial of your practical year at the University Medical Center Mainz, you must have a command of German at the C1 level as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). You will also be required to be matriculated at your home university at the time of the practical year and to have received a confirmation from your home universitythat the practical year is part of your required course there. If you have already completed your studies, you cannot apply for a practical year.
Students at Mainz are given preference in the allocation of practical year placements. Exchange students can therefore only apply for remaining free places once the official application phase is over. You can only complete your whole practical year at JGU Mainz if you are enrolled there. The summer semester lasts from 1 April to 30 September, and the winter semester, from 1 October to 31 March. If you would like to complete your practical year from March to June, you must be enrolled in the winter semester as well as in the summer semester!
