The Research Center of Translational Medicine

The Research Center of Translational Medicine is one of the two research centers at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) and is divided into the following three institutions:

The Research Center for Immunotherapy (FZI)

The Focus Program Translational Neurosciences (FTN)

The Center for Translational Vascular Biology (CTVB)

as well as the research unit/high potential research area: BiomaTiCS - Biomaterials, Tissues and Cells in Science

The research centers CTVB, FTN, and FZI as well as the research unit BiomaTiCS unite in their respective fields scientists from all over the Mainz campus and beyond, including the Faculties of Biology as well as Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Geosciences at JGU, as well as those from the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, the Institute of Molecular Biology, Translational Oncology Mainz (TRON), and the Paul Ehrlich Institute, Langen. Thanks to this inter-institutional and interdisciplinary exchange, fruitful regional collaborating groups are being established, which in turn become members of national as well as international research networks.

The Research Center of Translational Medicine is funded by the Research Initiative of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and by the Chief Scientific Officer of the University Medical Center Mainz.

The Research Center for Immunotherapy

The task of immunologists worldwide is to research the causes of and potential therapeutic approaches to infections, allergies, autoimmune diseases and cancer. The Research Center for Immunotherapy (FZI) combines the scientific expertise of various research fields at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, promotes national and international exchange on immunological research, and supports early-career researchers in the fields of clinical and fundamental research.

Focus Program Translational Neurosciences (FTN)

At the end of 2010, the research unit Translational Neurosciences (FTN) was established to work on biomedical core areas to promote the university’s emphasis on research activities in the field of neuroscience. By clarifying physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms, the FTN is helping to translate the near exponential increase in knowledge in molecular and cellular neuroscience into clinical practice.

The Center for Translational Vascular Biology

The Center for Translational Vascular Biology is dedicated to research into the prevention of vascular diseases. In 2002, the Faculty of Medicine developed preventive medicine as a core area of interest, which in 2008 was further developed and retitled “vascular prevention”. To more accurately reflect the activities of this research unit, in May 2013 it was once again renamed the Center for Translational Vascular Biology.

BiomaTiCS - Biomaterials, Tissues and Cells in Science

Since 2013, a group of clinical and research surgeons have been working together with fundamental research scientists in several internal and external collaborative projects designed to investigate the interaction of tissues and cells with exogenous materials and surfaces.
