Study at our faculty
If there is an existing agreement between your university and our faculty for student exchange (e. g. Erasmus+), you can spend one or two semesters at Mainz University to study medicine or dentistry. Your university will select and nominate you. For more information, approach the responsible coordinator at your university. More information here
If there is no existing agreement between your university and our faculty, you can apply to study with us for one or two semesters as a freemover. More information here
If wish to obtain a degree from Mainz University, you need to apply for a regular place (degree-seeking) at the university as a degree-seeking student. More information here
If you wish to do a clinical internship only ("Famulatur"), please contact the corresponding institute
Language proficiency
Incoming students at the faculty of medicine must demonstrate German language skills at level B2 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The university's International Study and Language Center (ISSK) offers German language courses to improve existing language skills.
Semester dates and lecture periods
The academic year is made up of two semesters: winter semester and summer semester.
Winter semester runs from October 1 through March 31 with a lecture period from mid-October to the end of February.
Summer semester runs from April 1 through September 30 with a lecture period from mid-April to the end of July.

Application
The application deadline for winter semester is always July 15 and for summer semester it is always January 15.

Erasmus+ (Online) Learning Agreement
Deadlines for Learning Agreement: September 1 for winter semester, March 1 for summer semester
A list of all courses offered to exchange students along with the corresponding ECTS credits can be found here(PDF 152,7 KB)
To receive ECTS credits for a module, you must attend it in full (for example, in anesthesiology you must attend two practical courses and four lectures). Our students' office will sign you up you for your chosen classes.
Please note that some courses such as internal medicine, urology and the surgery block practical course span over two semesters and can therefore only be selected if you spend the whole academic year at the faculty of medicine of Mainz University.

Once you have filled out your Learning Agreement, send it to auslandsstudium-medizin@uni-mainz.de and we will review your course selection. If any changes are necessary we will contact you.
If you would like to complete a clinical rotation/clinical internship ("Famulatur"), contact the clinic or institute of interest directly and once you have a placement offer, notify us so that we can include it in your Transcript of Records (ToR).
Practical Year
If you are interested in completing part of your Practical Year at University Medical Center Mainz, please take note of the following requirements:
- C1 level of German language proficiency (Common European Framework of Reference)
- Proof of enrolment at your home university
- Confirmation from your home university that completing a practical year is a mandatory part of your studies
You cannot apply for a pratical year at University Medical Center Mainz if you have already finished your studies or the practical year is not a mandatory part of your studies.
