By Car:

At the motorway intersection called "Mainz Süd" (A60/A63), proceed towards the center of town ("Zentrum") and follow the signs that say "Universitätskliniken".
For more specific directions use the routing feature of Google Maps.

By Public Transportation:

By Tram:
Starting at the Mainz Central Station take one of the following tram lines departing from the platform in front of the station building's main entrance:

  • 50 (going from Finthen/Römerquelle to Hechtsheim/Bürgerhaus)
  • 51 (going from Finthen/Poststraße to Hechtsheim/Bürgerhaus)
  • 52 (going from Bretzenheim/Bahnstraße to Hechtsheim/Am Schinnergraben)

Get off the tram at Gautor station (it is the third stop).
From here, walk into Obere Zahlbacher Straße, wich is righthand (looking in the driving direction of the tram). After you crossed the pedestrian lights, the building on your right is the IMBEI, followed by a multistory car park. Just behind that you will find the Department for Research and Teaching.

By Bus:
The busses directet towards the University Medical Center depart from the platform called "Hauptbahnhof E" located at the near end of Bahnhofstraße. Conveniently, all lines departing form this stop will take you to the University Medical Center. In particular these lines are:

  • 62 (going from Gonsenheim Wildpark to Weisenau/Friedrich-Ebert-Str.)
  • 63 (going from Mombach/Am Lemmchen to Laubenheim)
  • 67 (going from Mainz Hbf to Zornheim/Hahnheimer Str.)
  • 71 (going from Stadecken to Landwehrweg)

Get off at the stop called "Universitätskliniken". To reach the Department for Research and Teaching, cross the street and walk down the Langenbeckstraße (in the driving direction of the bus you just left) for approximatly 100 meters. The department's building is on the left.

By public transport

From Mainz main station take the tram (line 50, 51, or 52) from the square in front of the station through to the Gautor stop (third stop). From 9:00 a.m. onwards, you will only need to buy a “Kurzstrecken” ticket, which can be purchased from the driver.  When you exit the tram turn diagonally right in the direction of travel. The IMBEI is after the next crossroads (pedestrian traffic signals). Adjacent to this is the parking garage, and behind this is the Department of Research and Teaching (formerly the Dean’s Office).

It takes about 12 to 15 minutes to walk from the main station, and the route is somewhat complicated for people unfamiliar with the area. If you want to try, however, exit the station via the main entrance, turn right, and walk along the front of the station. When you get to the crossroads, on the other side you’ll see Alicenstraße going uphill next to the tram cutting and tunnel. To get over to Alicenstraße, you will need to go through the pedestrian underpass, in front of which is a signpost with directions to the Unikliniken (now known as the University Medical Center Mainz). Once through, follow another signpost and walk uphill along Alicenstraße along the tram tracks until you reach the next crossroads, the “Kupferberg crossroads.” Turn right there and cross the street straight away at the pedestrian traffic lights. Take the path on the left along the wall (behind which are currently dumpsters) and you’ll see a signpost to the Sportplatz. Walk past the sports field, then bear slightly left, turn left at the next junction, and continue until you reach the road. Do not cross this road, but continue to the right down the right side of the road until you reach Augustusplatz. On the opposite side of the square is the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Klinik und Poliklinik für Mund-, Kiefer- und Gesichtschirugie-plastische Operationen) and behind this the institute skyscraper – by far the tallest building in the area – with a radio mast on the roof. The Department of Research and Teaching is adjacent to this – a rounded building with mirrored windows (see home page).

By car

From motorway junction Mainz-Finthen (19)/exit Saarstraße, head towards the Innenstadt (city center), then towards the Universitätsklinikum (now know as the Universitätsmedizin), then towards the Parkhaus Universitätsklinikum (the parking garage of the University Medical Center Mainz).
