The University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is the only educational institution in the State of Rhineland-Palatinate that offers courses in medicine and dentistry. One in ten students at the University of Mainz is a member of the medical (approx. 3000) or dental school (approx. 600).

The objective and mission of the University Medical Center is to offer its students a range of high-quality, wide-ranging and differentiated courses and to constantly strive to improve it. To accomplish this, the University Medical Center has introduced a large number of innovative strategies in recent years (introduction of a quality assurance system, the MAICUM teaching support program, performance-based allocation of funds) that have significantly and measurably raised the standard of training. The excellent results achieved by students at Mainz in the state examinations and the favorable assessments provided for its courses demonstrate that this is the case. The fact that studying at the University Medical Center Mainz is attractive for students is also shown by the high number of applicants for admission when compared to the national average.
