Central Research Platforms and Core Facilities

Research Platforms

In recent years, several central scientific research and teaching platforms have been established that serve and are available to all facilities of the University Medical Center Mainz. The current scientific platforms at UMC include:

Biomaterials in Medicine

Cell Biology Unit (CBU)

Centre for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH)

Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Trials (IZKS)

Research Center for Mental Health Mainz (MZPG)

NeuroImaging Center Mainz (NIC)

Translational Animal Research Center (TARC)

Furthermore, researchers have several Core Facilities at their disposal.

Biomaterials in Medicine

In 2013, the years of experience and equipment from the fomer Department for Applied Structure and Microanalytics was united with that of the UMC's material sciences focus area BiomaTiCS under one scientific platform. This interdisciplinary platform thus offers all material sciences-oriented research groups the technical ability to work together interdisciplinarily.  The main task of the platform is the development and research of new medical applications.

Centre for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH)

The Centre for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH) is one of eight model centres funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) in scope of the funding measure „Integrierte Forschungs- und Behandlungszentren (IFB)“.

The goal of the CTH is to improve the research and treatment of thrombosis and hemostasis.

Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Trials (IZKS)

As a trial coordination center, the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Trials Mainz (IZKS) is a central institution at the University Medical Center. Researchers at the IZKS employ their expertise to support researchers and staff members at the UMC-Mainz clinics, those involved in trial networks, as well as start-up companies and life science industry stakeholders with planning and conducting clinical trials. In addition, the IZKS Mainz supports clinics at the University Medical Center by providing qualification opportunities for clinical research staff to assist them in conducting patient-oriented research.

Research Center for Mental Health Mainz

The "Mainzer Forschungszentrum für Psychische Gesundheit" is a new scientific research platform which was established as an alliance of the Clinics and Institutes of the University Medical Center Mainz and in cooperation with institutions of the Johannes Gutenberg University. The MZPG's goal is to bundle the research regarding psychological disorders at the University Medical Center and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in order to further strengthen the existing expertise.

NeuroImaging Center Mainz (NIC)

The neuroscientific focus at UMC initially promoted an interdisciplinary methodology platform for PET and MRI, initially only in humans, but since 2006, in animals as well (animal PET). In 2017, the Neuroimaging Center Mainz (NIC) developed from this platfom and has since worked in close cooperation with the Departments of Nuclear Medicine and Neuroradiology.

Among the taks of the Neuroimaging Center are the development of new paradigms in functional imaging, the integration of imaging methods witt neurophysiological methods, as well as the parallel use of MRI and PET.
