Information for Exchange and Erasmus Students - Incoming

Information in English

Within the framework of exchange programs, foreign students can study for one to two semesters at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz.If you would like to stay for more than two semesters or finish your degree at JGU, you must apply for a place as a normal student.

Various opportunities such as exchange cooperation between your home university and JGU, ERASMUS, and other stipend-programs such as DAAD and Fulbright scholarships exist in order to become an exchange student at JGU.

Language skills

Evidence of knowledge of German at Level B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages [GERS]) is required.The foreign language center  (Fremdsprachenzentrum) offers German courses at various levels of difficulty to deepen or improve German language skills.

Semester dates
The academical year is split in two semesters: The winter semester lasts from the 1st October to the 31st March, whereby the courses and seminars are be held from mid-October to the end of February. The summer semester takes from the 1st April to the 31st September, whereby the courses and seminars are be held from mid-April to the end of July.

Application
The application deadline for winter semester is July 15th and the deadline for summer semester is January 15th. You can download the necessary documents here.

Housing
Here you can find information about housing in the student dorms. Please bear in mind that it is important to start looking for housing long BEFORE your departure, as acceptance into the university does not automatically guarantee a spot in the dorms. You should turn in an application for the dorms with your university/exchange application.

Admission,  Preparation and Arrival to Mainz
A written admission notification will be sent to you by post at your home address. In this letter you will receive information about enrollment at JGU. Other important information such as visas, financing your stay, health insurance and a preparation checklist can be found here.

At the beginning of each Semester (April and October), ), the international department organizes 'Info Days' for all incoming students. The exact dates and times of the InfoDays will be included in your admissions packet. Information about enrollment, registering at the Foreign Authority office, and registering for German health insurance are among the topics discussed at the InfoDays.

Before or at the very latest on the day of the InfoDay you MUST have opened a German bank account and paid the social charge (this is for the student ticket and for free use of public transportation). Without evidence of a bank account you will NOT be permitted to attend the InfoDays.

Registration and Allocation to Courses
Registration and allocation to courses takes place in the study office (Studienbüro). Please bring your Learning Agreement (if available) as well as your enrolment certificate with you.
