Information for Exchange and ERASMUS Students - Incoming

Here you find information from the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz for exchange- and ERASMUS students.
Information in English
Within the framework of exchange programs, foreign students can study for one to two semesters at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. If you would study at Mainz for more than two semesters or you want to finish a degree at the university Mainz, you have to apply yourself for a regular study-place.

There is the opportunity to get a study-place as an exchange student via exchange-cooperation between your home university and the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, with ERASMUS or other stipend-programs from German or international institutions, such as DAAD or Fulbright.

Language skills

Evidence of knowledge of German language at Level B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages [GERS]) is required. In order to deepen your language skills, you can be participating in special German language courses for exchange students at the foreign language-centre (Fremdsprachenzentrum).

Semester dates
The academical year is split in two semesters: The winter semester lasts from the 1st October to the 31st March, whereby the teaching-courses are be held from mid-October to the end of February. The summer semester takes from the 1st April to the 31st September, whereby the teaching-courses are be held from mid-April to the end of July.

Application
The deadline for application for the winter semester is always the 15th July and for the summer semester, the 15th January. You can download the necessary documentation here.
 
Housing
Here you can find information about housing in the student dorm. Please bear in mind, that it is important to plan the housing search long before your departure. The admission to study in Mainz does not automatically guarantee you a place in a student dorm!
With your application for a university place, at the same time you need an application for an apartment in a student dorm.


Admission,  Preparation and Arrival to Mainz
A written admission notification will be sent to you by post at your home address. In this letter, you get information about the day to enrolment. Further important information about visas, financing, private health insurance and a checklist for your journey preparations can here be found.

At the beginning of April and October, the department International organises so-called Info Days. You will receive information about the exact dates of these InfoDays with your admission documents. Amongst different themes, there will be also information about enrolment for study, registering at the foreign office and registering at a German health insurance provider.

Before the Info Days, you should have opened a bank account, and the social-charge (for the student-ticket and also valid for free use of public transport in the RMV+RNN) shall have paid. Without evidence of a German bank account, you will not be able to participate at the Info Days.

Registration and Allocation to Courses
Registration and allocation to courses takes place in the study office (Studienbüro). Please bring your Learning Agreement (if available) as well as your enrolment certificate with you.
