MA Medical Ethics
Since the winter semester of 2008/2009, the further educates Master Degree program in medical ethics is offered by the Universitätsmedizin Mainz (university of medicine).
The program dates back to a collaboration between the institutes for history, philosophy and the ethics to medicine of the Universitätsmedizin Mainz, the Europäische Akademie zur Erforschung von Folgen wissenschaftlich-technischer Entwicklungen Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler GmbH (European Academy for Research into the Consequences from Scientific-Technologic Advance Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler), as well as the Fernuniversität (distance university) Hagen.
Until the summer semester of 2008, the program was offered as a distance learning course by the Fernuniversität Hagen.
Admission Requirements and Application Process
Target-group of this further educates master degree program Medical Ethics are graduates with a medical study or an other study which opens an access to a medical field.
In addition, a further admission requirements is at least a two year postgraduate professional activity (full- or part-time) in medical or health fields.
At the same time, the Master degree program is also offered to students from other departments, e.g. law and natural sciences, medicine, psychology and philosophy, if they could show a comparable degree as well as a postgraduated professional activity (full- or part-time).
Application will made directly at the Institutes for History, Philosophy and the Ethics to Medicine at the Universitätsmedizin Mainz.
Application deadlines:
• 1st of March for the summer semester
• 1st of September for the winter semester
Study Structure
In this four-semester Master degree program, there is placed a strong practical focus, by using an eight modules of combination. The following modules are currently offered:
• the basic principles of ethics and anthropology.
• the basic principles of anthropology and medical anthropology.
• Ethics of Institutions .
• Medical behaviour in the health system.
• Medicine-ethics and law
• Clinical ethics and consultation
• Ethics modern interventional procedures
• Ethics modern diagnostic procedures
Study Duration
The general study duration including the time to write the Master’s thesis, is two years (4 semesters). For people working full-time, there is the option (on application) to extend the study duration to a total of four years
